During the Vietnamese War, a Washington-approved sanctuary for enemy troops in Laos and Cambodia is a recipe for disaster, but a covert CIA operation made up of Special Forces volunteers deemed expendable, penetrates the borders and neutralizes the enemy’s advantage. The Green Berets, Rick Barinelli, Warren Fahey, and Bob Akamura, make a pact: If any one of them goes missing, the others will commit to, "rescue, ransom, or revenge."

Barinelli, conflicted with a growing passion for a beautiful Vietnamese woman, Ai Dao, gains distinction for intel successes that disrupt the Tet Offensive and becomes known to the enemy as "the Gray Ghost". Hanoi orders General Wong to capture or kill him regardless of cost, and the brilliant and sadistic Wong spins an elaborate trap. He orchestrates the kidnapping of Ai Dao, but captures the headstrong Akamura instead. Now, against harrowing odds, it’s up to Barinelli and Fahey to attempt their rescue.

Racing to a shattering climax, Hunting With Tigers illustrates how ordinary men can rise to acts of selfless heroism within the savagery of war.

Eugene,

                     Barinelli's War

I just finished your novel/history. About the middle of the book and following, I thought” damn, he ,must have lived this!” The action is realistic and just like hopeless combat. It is an outstanding story of young soldiers against fire, steel, weather, loneliness. . . and winning! A great contribution.

I had thought that Appleman’s recent (to me) book, East of Chosin,  was the most realistic story of the almost unknown role of the 7th US Infantry Division at Chosin Reservoir, told with combat realism. Your book ranks right there with it.

Thank you for a highly commendable story of the heroism of those whom Time Magazine termed “destiny’s draftees” and “peculiar soldiers,” when declaring we were Times Man of the Year 1950.

Cordially,

Genio is the story of a poor and unschooled Italian boy, growing up in the midst of the greatest mass migration in modern history: the emmigration of four million Italians to North and South America.

Brazil is bursting with energy as a million Europeans labor in her vastness. Beatings, intimidations, and exploitations create an unstable environment for the immigrants. Genio, distracted by the patrician beauty of the young Maria, swept up in the passion of the mixed-blood Trinita, finds his fortune only to hazard it all in defense of his fellow emigres.

Legacy of a Hero is the remarkable story of Genio Basilici, legendary patriarch of an Italian community near Boston. In 1946, he sends his son, Enrico, to Italy to find and assist family members in the aftermath of war. Alternating with his son's search and harrowing escape from a Neapolitan street gang and his brief but passionate affair with Graciella, Genio relives his arrival in America at the turn of the century in flashbacks of memory. It was a time when virulent prejudice and constant, anti-Italian hate campaigns forced him to step forward in defense of his countrymen; the time of the Great Depression, of Sacco and Vanzetti and the anarchist movement. It was a time when a huge influx of non-English speaking immigrants flooded our cities and sparked a firestorm of resentment. It was an incendiary era when ordinary individuals rose to extraordinary heights. It was a time to remember.

What they’re saying:

"I was an immigrant and the daughter of an immigrant and I cried because my father passed away long before he could read this wonderful book." M. Blanchette, Fall River, Ma.

"I grew up in the Hyde Park/ Dedham area. Thank you for a truly marvelous story. I’m getting copies for my grandkids." J. Famiglietti, Phoenix, Az.

"…about time a great book was written about honest Italians in America! Keep it up. I hope you’ll write more." S. Battaglia, North End, Ma.

"I’m so proud of my great-grandfather and all the other immigrants of that day. Thank you for a story that fills me with such pride." R. Colacino, S.I., N.Y.

"Legacy of a Hero is a wonderful book.. an important part of Dedham and U.S. history..will make a welcome addition to enhance our collection … augment our knowledge and understanding of the past." Dedham Historical Society, P. Bradner, S. Waxman

"Legacy…is remarkable..elegantly woven by a gifted writer who understands the importance of the struggles of the first Italian immigrants to the United States..will educate future generations of Italian Americans about our shared history." The Italian Tribune

"The tale is well told. The author provides a lively use of evocative description and a delightful grasp of the nuance of language – a context that enhances the depiction of the fundamentally appealing individuals who are the focus of the narrative. The characters are well drawn and their actions are believable…Eugenio’s reasoned assessment of the "Sacco-Vanzetti mess" and its impact on the community is a "must read" on that subject." The Dedham Times. Review by B. Hanson.

"Legacy of a Hero is an inspiring story with interesting characters. It’s a well written book which we feel would be of interest to many.. Congratulations on a job well done!" The Italian American Press, R. Ferraro, Director
